Money mindset shows up in both our personal lives and in our businesses. Money can be one of the hardest things for us therapists to talk to clients about. I get it! We are therapists and the vast majority of us did not go to business school. We went into this profession to help people, not get rich. But if I've learned one thing on my journey, it's that you can't show up for your clients in the way you want if you aren't taking care of your own financial needs.
Do you look at your weekly schedule and think "How am I going to fit in all of these clients, emails, consultations, soccer practice, dance class, kid's birthday party this week?" I hear you! The first thing that gets dropped from the schedule when life gets busy is your needs. We can also recreate these same patterns in our private practices. Seeing clients at inconvenient times may feel necessary at first, but before you know it the resentment and exhaustion you felt at your previous jobs will come creeping back in. Creating a schedule that works for you and your family will allow you to experience the work-life balance you need.
Who we spend time with matters! Separate of having a niche in your private practice is identifying your ideal client. For example, if your specialty is trauma that is still a large group of clients! Speaking directly to a specific market - age/generation, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, profession, personality - is incredibly helpful. Not only is it good for business, but working with ideal clients leads to more joy and fulfillment.
Are you showing up in your business as your most authentic self? Clarifying your values can help ensure that you are bringing your values into your business. Do you value... Nature? Social justice? Calm? Animals?
The beautiful thing about having your own business is that you get to be 100% authentically YOU. Everything that you value and makes you unique is exactly what will draw clients to your practice. Having a business that aligns with your values also allows for seamless beauty between your personal & professional life.
